Chinese internet giant’s plans to boost R&D spending will still leave it behind big tech rivals

Alibaba’s plan to triple research and development spending may not turn out to be as ambitious as it seems at first glance.

The Chinese internet giant says it plans to spend more than $15 billion on R&D over the next three years, compared with about $6 billion spent over the last three. Assuming some level of gradual uptick implies the company’s annual R&D spend will pass the $6 billion mark by the fiscal year ending March 2020.
